Owen's Beach Concessions

Located in Ruston , WA , the bayside town inside a city.

Looking Eastward to Commencement Bay and nestled into
the quaint northwest garden village of Ruston, the market is
also just three blocks from Point Defiance Park, Zoo & Aquarium
and three blocks from the waterfront.  The Ruston Market has
operated as the Ruston hub for local news and friendly chit-chat
for 100 years -since the days that Ruston was an industrial
company town.  The Market boasts an old-fashioned soda fountain
with counter seating & burgers to-die-for, convenience mart
groceries, kayak rentals and roller blade sales.  If you’re lucky,
you’ll meet owners Don and Beth Torbet, learn some local history,
sit outside at a bistro table watching the sailboats dancing across
the bay and listening to some good old fashioned rock-n-roll, and
maybe catch one of the fabulous rainbows that rise above the bay.

HISTORY OF RUSTON MARKET. For one hundred years, the Ruston Market has been a family owned and operated business, passing each generation to a new couple.  Olson's Market and Bakery was one of the first businesses that sprung up surrounding the industries that supported Ruston.  Ed Olson opened his shop at 52nd & Shirley the same year as the town's formal incorporation, 1906.  In 1917 a fire devastated the entire block, nearly 1/5 of the tiny community's properties were destroyed, including the schoolhouse.  The Olson's rebuilt their market at 51st and Shirley, where it still stands to this day.  Ed offered door-to-door service for the ladies of the town and gathered supplies by horse and buggy down at the rail-line at the bottom of the hill.  Eventually, a trolley car was introduced for the convenience of the townsfolk, and the Olson's was a stop along the way.  Ed's daughter, Ellen was the second generation of Olson's to run the market, and she and her husband, Paul Allie took it over and ran it from 1921 until they passed it in turn to Ellen's daughter Ruth and her husband, Leonard Peltier in 1954.   With no more Olson family members interested in taking on the family trade, the Ruston market passed to another couple.  Don and Beth Torbet purchased the building, ran the business and raised their family in Ruston the following generation.
